How to Code Remotes to and Wire the HomeLink Compatible Garage / Gate Receiver

Wire the HomeLink compatible receiver to your motor's supply and push-button terminals, then code remotes with the Learn 1 button. Includes the terminal guide and how to erase the memory.

Time required 15 min
Difficulty Moderate
Tools needed
  • The receiver module
  • Your motor's manual to identify its terminals
  • Small screwdriver for the terminal block
  • Remotes or HomeLink to be coded
Before you start Wiring involves the motor's low-voltage control terminals. Switch off the power to the motor before connecting anything, and if you are not confident, have a garage or gate technician wire the receiver. Never work on mains wiring yourself. Make sure nobody is standing under or near the door while you program and test. Do this within a few metres of the motor so you can test straight away. Keep the remote and its battery away from children; if a coin or button cell is swallowed, seek immediate medical attention.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Wire the receiver to the motor

Connect V+ on the receiver to the motor's 12V or 24V supply terminal, GND to the motor's COM / Common / GND / 0V terminal, CH1 left to the motor's push-button input (often marked PB, WB or OSC) and CH1 right to COM / Common / GND / 0V. Check your motor manual if the terminals are numbered or unlabelled.

  2. Power up

Restore power to the motor. The receiver's learn LED should be off, ready for coding.

  3. Press Learn 1 once

Press and immediately release the Learn 1 button (top left on the receiver). The learn LED lights.

  4. Hold a button on the remote

Press and hold any button on the new remote (or start the HomeLink pairing in the car). The learn LED begins to flash and then goes out, which means the code is stored.

  5. Test

Operate the door with the remote. If nothing was pressed within 10 seconds of step 3, the LED flashes and goes out on its own and you will need to repeat from step 3.

Frequently asked questions

How do I erase the receiver's memory?
Press and hold Learn 1 until the learn LED comes on and goes out, which usually takes about 10 seconds. Then test a previously working remote to confirm it no longer operates the door.
What do the motor terminals usually look like?
V+ is normally labelled 12V or 24V. Ground is COM, Common, GND or 0V. The push-button input is often PB, WB or OSC. If your motor uses numbers only, the motor manual lists what each terminal does.
The learn LED goes out before I press the remote.
You have 10 seconds after pressing Learn 1. Press it again and hold the remote straight away.
Do I need a technician?
It is recommended. The receiver's own instructions advise consulting a garage or gate technician for wiring, and a professional will also confirm the correct terminals on your specific motor.
